well im planning to reformat my laptop and i've already activated vista in it

and i plan to reformat it using the recovery disk that comes with it when i bought it

so can i still activate it and get updates?

Yes you can, just make sure you do not lose that license and you are free to activate it. I have had to do fresh installs of Microsoft many times using the same OS license you will be fine.
