Could someone help me please?

Why are antibiotics ineffective against viruses? (i know part of the question but my teacher wants it more.)?free antivirus download

anti biotics only treat infections not virus related illness....

antibiotics interrupt the basic biological functions of bacteria.

different antibiotics work in different ways, for example erythromycin(sp?) stops bacteria from making protein by binding to the ribosomes, and beta-lactams(sp?) interrupt cell wall cross linking (not to be confused with the capsule, so ignore a previous answer!).

viruses are not living organisms - they have no biological systems to interrupt.

viruses invade other cells and subvert the target cells biological functions to replicate more of themselves.

if we created an antibiotic which worked against viraly infected cells, we would be creating an antibiotic which worked against our own cells

----UPDATE----

just read william i's link

this is b*llocks! the chap who wrote this had an education in medicine, but there are many, many flaws in this article! please feel free to email me and I can point out the multiple schoolboy errors!
Because it also kills the good bacteria which, in turn, makes you less immune to the diseases. Also, bad bacteria is growing to be immune from the antibiotics because humans use them so often.
Some antibiotics are ineffective against viruses because your body's defence system is different to some other peoples. different antibiotics treat different things. so maybe that is why some antibiotics are ineffective against viruses.

Antibiotics do things like interfere with the ability of bacteria to synthesise their capsule substance. Since viruses work by hijacking host cell machinery, interfering with that would be equivalent to poisoning the host.
the simple answer is that antibiotics can kill living things such as bacteria but because viruses are not living things, it has no affect. this is why there has never been a cure for ANY illness that is caused by a virus. Such as the common cold or AIDS. both are caused by viruses. A virus has to run its course, THAT is the only cure!!
