If I buy windows Vista, can I have windows xp on the same machine?

If I buy windows Vista, can I have windows xp on the same machine? I am a gamer who wants Direct 10 but I know Vista is not so good for many apps. If it is possible ,can I switch back and forth between os's like a mac can do?
