Can I install Windows XP on a PC that has already has Vista on it?

Ok, I need to get a laptop and a lot of my software will not work on Vista. Can I install Windows XP on it? Will the key number for Vista work for XP? Do I need to get a copy of XP with a new software key? And, you don't have to answer this one, why is Windows such a resource hog and gets worse with each new release?

Yes, you can install XP.

The Vista key will not work for XP.

You do need a copy of XP with a Software Key.

Yes. Now legally speaking unless you go out and buy the RETAIL (aka, extremely expensive version) of XP. Here's the short version:

Only if you have Vista Business Edition or Vista Ultimate (not home premium)

You must also own the Windows XP Professional CD.

No the Vista key will not work for XP. You must register with your old XP key, and then explain this all to Microsoft on the phone when you activate.

Check the source for more info.
first you cannot install xp on a pc which already has vista. you can install vista on a pc with xp. if you have a pc which had xp, you should have the key for it already with the xp system cd, otherwise you need a new key for it. uninstall vista, and re-install xp after you have the system cd for xp and a valid key. if the pc is new, the seller may be able to provide you with a system cd and key for little or no cost. install xp as you normally would. once installed, go to disk manager and partition the hard drive allowing sufficient space for any xp programs to be loaded,. once you have the new partition, install vista to the second partition. (you will need to fast format the new partition before installiung anything to it and that is done using the disk manager for windows). you then can load any vista programs to the vista partition.
